Experts and professionals who work with victim-survivors of sexual violence need access to information and resources for those they work with, to give the most up-to-date and appropriate support. Experts and professionals also support loved ones of victim-survivors in addition to themselves after being exposed to violence. Anyone who works with people who experience sexual violence can experience vicarious trauma, or the phenomenon that being regularly exposed to trauma can have a lasting impact on mental health. Access to mental health support is essential for experts and professionals to prevent burnout and compassion fatigue, or the loss of the ability to feel empathetic and compassionate to those who have lived through trauma. Experts and professionals must engage in self-care and continuously keep themselves educated on sexual violence to best support victim-survivors.
