Survivors With Disabilities

Survivors living with a physical and/or mental disability face multiple barriers that significantly hinder their ability to report abuse and access to vital resources for support and healing. Many victim-survivors encounter challenges when it comes to disclosure, often due to lack of understanding or awareness among service providers regarding the unique circumstances faced by disabled survivors. Accessibility issues create an additional barrier to navigating support systems, with physical, communication, and technological barriers making it difficult to seek help. Additionally, survivors may struggle with trauma-related symptoms that can impact their ability to advocate for themselves.

The infantilization and devaluing of people with disabilities can contribute to systematic discrimination, often leading to a denial of their autonomy and agency, particularly in matters related to their bodies and choices. Conservatorship and caretaker abuse pose significant threats, as those entrusted with care can become exploitative and abusive, perpetuating a cycle of dependence and vulnerability. It is essential to prioritize the sexual autonomy of individuals living with disabilities, recognizing their right to make informed decisions about their body and relationships.
