Senior Survivors

Community

Aging adults, also referred to as “seniors” face unique challenges and vulnerabilities that often go unrecognized. Elder abuse is a pressing issue that perpetuates cycles of harm and silence. Many older adults experience barriers to disclosing abuse, compounded by societal perceptions of age and sexuality that can minimize their experiences.

Caregivers and assisted living environments, while intended to provide support, can sometimes become settings where neglect and abuse occurs. Additionally, the prevalence of Alzheimer’s and dementia compound issues when it comes to reporting abuse and providing consent. Misbelief and inability to report hinder senior’s access to justice and healing, contributing to a culture of silence.

Survivors.org Community

As is the case with other marginalized populations, many sexual violence organizations do not have staff or materials that consider the experience of a senior survivor. Finding shared spaces with other senior survivors can mean the difference between feeling supported and feeling overlooked. In creating this space for senior survivors to cultivate connection, we hope to dismantle stereotypes and foster true community.
